Variables is a superpower in the Blippa system.
A variable can be used to show the current WiFi code in all conference room pages.
Or the current price.
Or the current date or time.
Or the product ingredients (fetched from a Product Information Management (PIM) system.
And, as with everything else in Blippa, there are several places to create (place) a variable:
-
In the Account variables
(Labelsadmin-Settings-Variables).
This is good for account-wide stuff like wifi codes, prices etc.
These variables can be used in all objects. -
In a Function Block.
(Labelsadmin-Function Blocks)
This is the most used place to create a variable: The variable will automatically be present in all objects using the function block.
Be smart: Since all variables in an object needs to be fetched when the object is requested, it is prudent to avoid loading variables if there is no need. By putting the variables into different function block, a conference room object does not have to check for ingredients.. -
In a Template.
(Labelsadmin-Templates)
This is a bad place to create a variable because the variable will only be copied to new objects. If you would like to change/edit the variable you will need to update all created objects…
Note: If a template uses a function block, all variables from the function block will be present in the template. And, all objects created by the template will have a live link to the function block and its variables. -
In an object.
This is even worse than creating the variable inside a template. You will need to do this for every object that you create…
Avoid this beginners misstake!Conclusion:
-
Work with function blocks.
-
Put your variables in different function blocks.
-
Put generic variables in the Account variables.
